We hear about it all the time – a member of the LGBT community attracts the attention of the wrong homophobe in power and suddenly life becomes a living hell for that person. This time, the perpetrator of that hell, former Michigan Assistant Attorney GeneralAndrew Shirvell, will pay big time.
Chris Armstrong, who was the first openly gay University of Michigan Student Body President, was stalked by former Michigan attorney general and had his sexuality likened to Nazis.
In late 2010, Shirvell posted a hateful, vitriolic blog about Armstrong.
“This is a site for concerned University of Michigan alumni, students, and others who oppose the recent election of Chris Armstrong – a RADICAL HOMOSEXUAL ACTIVIST, RACIST, ELITIST, & LIAR – as the new head of student government,” the blog read.
Further, Shirvell posted photoshopped images of Armstrong on the blog, with a rainbow flag emblazoned with a swastika, and the word “resign” across Armstrong’s face. The defamation escalated to stalking, where Shirvell trolled Armstrong’s Facebook page, reported his every move, and even went so far as to protest the student body president’s “gay agenda” outside his home. He once even referred to Armstrong as “Satan’s representative” on the defamatory blog.
CNN reported this week that a judge found in favor of Chris Armstrong, who filed a suit against the former Attorney General that included defamation, infliction of emotional distress, stalking and invasion of privacy.
