Gingrich: Administration Believes Obama is Superior to the Pope

When Newt Gingrich was campaigning in California earlier this week, he stopped by the Hoover Institution where he sat down for an interview with Research Fellow Peter Robinson.

Early on in the interview, Gingrich accused the Obama administration of waging "war on religion" and Robinson later asked Gingrich if he really meant to use the word "war" and gave him an opportunity to take it back and clarify.

But Gingrich was having none of it, standing by his use of the phrase while accusing the Obama Administration of believing that President Obama is superior to the Pope and being part of a half-century long campaign by "secularists [to] get between man and God":

Gingrich: No. I think that it's very clear that this is an administration which believes that secular government - they believe that the President is superior to the Pope in the ability to define what the church is allowed to do.

Obama's position, which is truly dishonest - this new compromise is, I mentioned Orwell's "1984." this is Orwellian ... We have been through a fifty year period, starting in the 1960s, in which the courts, and the bureaucracies, and now the politicians have waged war on religious freedom in America. And I think we need to understand this is just one more phase in an ongoing assault on Christianity and on Judaism and on organized religion by secularists who believe that they have the right to get between man and God.

"The Pope... how many divisions has he got?" J. Stalin.

Does anybody realize that King Henry VIII invented the Anglican (Episcopal) Church so..

  1. He could divorce Anne B. as he needed an heir to the thrown.
  2. Because he didn't want money flowing out of England to the Vatican.

It wasn't personal.... just business.

Yes, Mike. This country is not subservient to the Pope -- a newsflash for the newly converted Gingrich.

In this country,I hope Newt is correct. After all, the citizens of the U S voted to give Obama his authority: so exactly who voted for the Pope? The Pope is superior in Vatican City, which is fine with me: but I don't live...there!

Try again Newt, this piece of mud won't stick on the wall either...I might be more interested in what are your solutions to this economic mess the last republicans in the WH left us in...Newt! Care to comment on that....Newt!

Better Careful

The right-wing are irrational in their hatred of President Obama. They've made themselves crazy over having a half-black President. I certainly hope my President's people think the President is superior to the Pope; I didn't vote for any Pope, and wouldn't vote for any Pope to lead the United Stated of America.

Gingrich was never tightly wrapped; he's gone round the bend with his right-wing pals now.

Hey, the current crop of Republican Presidential candidates are so poor, maybe they can draft the Pope to run for President. Yeah! That's the ticket!!!

In this dreadful Holy War on Religion, I've had enough. I'm surrendering! 'Cause I'm gonna start my own religion. Definitely. Hey Newt -wanna join? We're gonna have open marriages and multiple wives and all SORTS of neat stuff that you're just gonna love! But no nasty stoning of adulterers. Promise! Santorum makes a fine preacher...in fact, we'll make him Saint. As for Mr. Obama,  obviouly, we'll need to demonize him, and his dog. As for Mitt and Ron, hey, just for you guys: no taxes AT ALL ...and human sacrifice of illegal aliens. Televised. Whoooppee! What a country! :-)

Gingrich is a self supporting, egoist who's only aim is to support Newt.

His recent conversion to Catholicism is not impressive nor believable. He is a zealot.

Zealots of any side are dangerous.

I agree, Michael. If Newt is a Catholic than I am a dog catcher. In fact, I know more about dogs that Newt obviously does about Catholicism. He's really giving the religion a black eye.

actually by implying that the pope is superior to the president, then that COULD be construed as being sedition.

Yes -- Jonathan -- it is sedition. I think they fought some wars over this very point in Europe. I thought most Americans were kind of hoping to avoid similar conflicts!
