Why Pro-Choice Groups Think They Can Win Back The House For Democrats

This election cycle is set to be an historic one for women not only because of an impressive crop of women candidates running for Congress, but because they are riding a backlash wave against the the unprecedented attacks on women’s reproductive care in the House in 2011. Thanks to Republicans so-called ‘War on Women,’ pro-choice groups have seen an increase in support and fundraising that they will turn around and use to take back the House of Representatives.

At a pen and pad session with journalists last week, EMILY’s List president Stephanie Schriock, whose organization raises money for pro-choice, stressed how the backlash against Republicans’ had grown women candidates’ base of support.

For starters, EMILY’s List’s own membership numbers tell an important story. “We have doubled our community since John Boehner took over the House of Representatives,” Schriock announced, and “a lot of it has been driven by the attacks on women’s issues across the board by Tea Party Republicans in the house…[they] have really, really energized a lot of folks.”

In a typical off-election year, EMILY’s List typically grows their membership by about 50,000, says Schriock. But last year, as Republicans attempted, among other things, to defund Planned Parenthood, redefine rape, and cut Title X family planning funding, the group grew by more than 640,000. They now have over 1 million members. With a larger donor base, of course, comes more money. At this point in they cycle, they have raised more money than ever before and are poised by raise a record amount of money throughout the cycle.

In 2012, Democrats need to win back 25 seats from Republicans in order to flip the House of Representatives to Democratic control. EMILY’s List is already working with 17 women and are in conversations with many more. Of those 17 women, about half are planning to challenge Tea Party freshmen — a key group of unpopular politicians that the DCCC are targeting in their Red to Blue campaign. “A return to the Democratic majority in the house will be led by these EMILY’s List women candidates,” Shriock said, “running against these Tea Party guys.”

I can't understand why any woman --- or any man who likes women, and/or who is a husband or father, or may become one -- would ever vote Republican. Perhaps these two demographic groups will vote 100% Democratic this time, as they always should!

Agreed.

After all, this congress has been the worst in American history. They can't, no matter how hard they try, take any credit for ANY upturn in the economy.

And we were all raised by women, no? Who better to oversee the nation than they? They are also the larger segment of the population. This economy depends on THEM.

I, for one have no problem if this society became a matriarcal one, and I'm a guy. I have no insecurities like the clowns who are responsible for attacking women's rights. Since women outnumber men by a 4 to 3 margin in this country, it always perplexed me why the right would attack them.

Think we'll see a little "shrinkage", if the GOP lose the house AND senate in November? LOL!

From the outrage over the Komen foundation's debacle I think the pro-choice group with grow much faster. Those anti-women believing women cannot decide for themselves are going to be hard pressed to get backing as too many of us lived through the woman's liberation movement and aren't willing to begin from square one again. We have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren that mean more to us than anything and their future is our focus.

No attack on a woman! For God's sake. So, you want an abortion...go get it. So, you want to have sex and don't protect yourself and get pregnant....have an abortion. I know, already, that your sex drive is phenomenal, so, have sex.

My son was one of three men who could have possibly been the father of this pretty little girl's baby. Sperm sent off to Chicago. He was ready to pack his bags and move to Chicago at the tender age of 19. Oh, well. He was not the father. Oh, but the good news is the father was a prominent doctor with a little ole family of his own. She definitely had this baby! They are both living the good life. Three men within one cycle! Phenomenal! One sexy little girl!

The same can be said of your son. Unprotected sex goes both ways you know. Perhaps a sit down with your son will help him to realize that he alone should take more responsibility for where and how his seed is planted and to stop assuming that it is the woman's responsibility. Perhaps a little lesson on how to process to a consequence might get him to see that using a condom should be as necessary as brushing his teeth 3 times a day. This way a possible abortion of a pregnancy produced with his seed would be impossible because he controls where he puts it. Oh a perhaps a discussion on the character of the woman you might want to reproduce with is also in order. We: check his box off once we know he has got a clue.

I talked to my son about birth control and his responsibility. I emphasized that if he didn't do his part he couldn't complain if his sex partner became pregnant. I also told him to own up and not try to push the responsibility upon her or accuse her of having "other" partners if a pregnancy occurred as this could be tested and if he'd had sex with a young woman he needed to be respectful if conditions when awry.

I think we as parents much be diligent in making sure our children have the information that's needed when they become sexually active. My daughters knew what was expected and followed through on their part. I told all three if they had a partner that fussed about using birth control to walk away and find another partner as this one wasn't doing their part.

Thanks, GA Girl, I'm sure my diligence came in part from asking my mother about sex and her answer was, "You've watched the animals" and that was all she'd say. That certainly wasn't enough. lol

You all are so sanctimonious, aren't you? What happened to the old argument of "in the heat of the moment"? Of course, birth control should be practiced by both. Both of my sons were instructed by both me and their Dad. But, suppose they both had a "in the heat of the moment" thing. You know, where hormones just get the best of you! He almost became a father and sure learned from that experience. She learned, also.

For the record, your assumption that I am anti choice is just that....an assumption based on prejudice.

magno: I believe that the "sanctimonious" tone was a direct result of you seeming to blame the "sexy girl" and ONLY the "sexy girl" in your post. It came across quite clearly that you felt she was a tramp who was trying to "trap" your son. Your post makes it sound as if your son (and by extension, all men) have NO responsibility when they spread their semen around.

That was my take on the comment too....

Look, as the parent you can only do/teach/preach/lecture as much as you can. It's still up to the child to think for themselves. If the "heat of the moment excuse works for guys, then it should work for girls as well" No more double standard!

magnoliaave post clearly implicated the Women as the sole cause of the unfortunate situation and take umbrage to this of a number or reason that I have clearly outline above. It is hard to argue that the heat of the moment can happen 3 times with there different partners and you son perhaps should consider the depth and extent of a relationship before practicing serial unprotected monogamy which can and often do lead to sexually transmitted diseases (babies also included in this possibility). So judge the woman all you want but you need to use the same measurement on your son.

Precisely why kids need to be educated about birth control -- so the "heat of the moment" does not result in a lifetime of commitment they are not ready to take on. The right wing pretense that if you don't permit kids to have birth control, it causes them to choose celibacy is the heart of the problem -- then it all reverts back to the "heat of the moment" -- and the woman's fault. As the right wing was fond of saying back in the day, "She shouldn't have got herself pregnant!"

I had a very unfortunate experience with a a man and his "heat of the moment" debacle and was raped by a therapist of abused women I'd dated twice. When the District Attorney read this man's confession he looked at me and said, "Why sully a man's reputation for a moment of passion" So needless to say, whenever I hear about a women being called "easy" a "tramp" "loose" "sexy" or any of this I find it particularly offensive.

For women the heat of the moment equates names like slut and whore where as the heat of the moment of a man it equates a moment of passion. I got to say I real sick of men directing the narrative on issues like this.

JS -- sully his reputation? He should be behind bars. I too loathe all those words which attempt to make it evil for women to have sex -- and therefore, also make women culpable for rape. So sorry you had to go through such crap.

This incident occurred over 30 years ago and I was pretty taken aback by some of the men's attitudes about rape and women. The judge did give this guy hell, however in front of a lot of people so that helped. The man in question was highly offended that he was reprimanded. Luckily for me I had male friends that were by my side all the way. All these years later we are still fighting against those that feel that women "ask for it" when a man abuses them and if they have a "title" we're suppose to suck it up. This does no one any good in my opinion. Thanks, feliznavidad.

All I know is that because of the SGK - PP debacle, I have really come to appreciate the use of social media in getting information out there and forming counter measures to combat a particular issue.

Rachel Maddow made a statement on her program when SGK exploded, and that was....Why the sudden and pronounced outrage? Congress has been trying to defund PP for a long time and in many ways. Why did this explode the way it did?

Well, I have my explanation, but that isn't what I'm getting at. The point is, if pro-choice wants the religious right to back off anti-abortion, and now anti-contraception issues, use the social media like we did on SGK. The group I joined was formed the night the story broke, and within hours, we were 600 strong. By the next morning, it was over 2,000. And within a couple of days, we were over 10,000. A Facebook page was created with a well designed logo perfected within 24 hours. Komen's webpage and FB page were carpet bombed to the point that they couldn't take down all the negative messages quickly enough.

We need to keep this focus on all members of Congress. We need to carpet bomb those we agree with and those we disagree with so that they will know we mean business.

I use a lot of links to different causes that have taken off with great speed also Shelby. Thanks. Anyone can design a petition and I've done this. Even if 100 sign and pass it on there can be a huge impact. We should never feel defeated in our causes or believe our voices won't be heard. The social media is catching a clue and all we have to do is participate.

Thanks for your efforts on this issue, Shelby. I think the right wing congressmen who stand in opposition to choice and women's health issues will be defeated -- and I hope your ideas about social media are part of that accomplishment.
